If you wait until the very end of our visits—after all the children or seniors have met us and watched us and had their questions answered—there’s almost always a golden moment when the staff approaches and quietly asks if they can pet us. They may be a doctor or a nurse at the end of a long work day, an administrator who just put out a proverbial fire in the building, a communications director who spent the visit capturing other people’s joy.
